“Sport not only keeps children fit, healthy, and active, but it also builds their confidence and social skills.” – Direct Gov. However, a large percentage of kids quit sports by the time they reach their teenage years.
While there are many other reasons that cause their discouragement, it may be safe to say that some of them leave because they feel that they cannot succeed in the field they have chosen. If you are a parent and you have a child who feels this way, it can also be quite frustrating for you especially if you do not know the best way to reach out to him. However, there are means you can use to alleviate the pressure they face on the playing field, whether their game of choice is skiing or kickboxing.
1. Determine your little one’s own goals and focus on them. Too many times, a parent can get too carried away in the competitiveness of a sport that they begin to transfer their own dreams on the child. For your little Peter or Jim to succeed in the field of martial arts, he must be able to enjoy what he is doing.
2. If he fails or commits a mistake, do not allow him to dwell on his error. Talk to him and make him understand that even if he did something wrong, there is always a chance to make up for it or to improve on his game. Address his problems and use them as learning tools that can help develop his sportsmanship.
3. Encourage effort, not winning. As much as possible, you should refrain from telling your kid that he is a great athlete. While it may initially seem like a positive way to encourage him, it can create future problems—at the moment that he faces a crisis, he may no longer think that he is “great”. Instead, tell your young one that you are proud of him because he practices and works hard.
4. Involve yourself in his skill development. Attending his training sessions and tournaments can make your child feel that you are interested in what he does. However, keep yourself from excessively advising him. Learn to trust his instincts.
Fully supporting your youngster in his athletic endeavours also means making sure that he has all the equipment he needs. For instance, if he interested in kickboxing, you should get him the necessary defensive gear crucial to the sport. Likewise, if he has a passion for skiing, you should buy him kids ski helmets and other essential accessories.
